Three generations of women decided it was time to lose weight and start living their healthiest lives. With the help of HonorHealth's Bariatric Center, Tiffany, Burnetta and Mihya all underwent bariatric weight loss surgery on the same day and lost a combined 412 pounds — and counting!

Gastric sleeve surgery — also called sleeve gastrectomy — has become the most common weight loss surgery performed in the U.S. The surgery restricts the amount of food you can eat at one time and helps control hunger signals. Gastric sleeve surgery can be a very effective way to lose weight and improve your quality of life. People who have the procedure can lose 60% or more of their excess weight within the first year following surgery.

Offered at HonorHealth Bariatric Center in Scottsdale, gastric sleeve surgery has many advantages:

  • It doesn't require a bypass or rerouting of the food stream.
  • The surgery has a positive effect on blood sugar control.
  • It induces rapid and significant weight loss.
  • If you don't have diabetes or gastroesophageal reflux disease (heartburn), you may be an ideal candidate for this procedure.

Gastric sleeve surgery impacts the gut hormones that control your appetite. The minimally invasive, irreversible surgery involves removing part of your stomach and creating a new, small, sleeve-shaped stomach pouch that is roughly the same size as a banana. The new pouch holds less food, making you feel full after eating, resulting in a lower calorie intake and weight loss.

How is gastric sleeve surgery performed?

A surgeon removes the part of your stomach that expands (about 85%) and creates a new, small, sleeve-shaped stomach pouch, which is about the size and shape of a banana. This is why gastric sleeve is also called vertical sleeve gastrectomy, or "VSG surgery."

The new pouch holds less food than the normal stomach. The pouch significantly reduces the number of calories you can consume. As is the case with gastric bypass surgery, gastric sleeve surgery impacts gut hormones that control your appetite and make you feel full after eating.
